1. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger [Amazon] -
   (Fiction) I cannot count the number of people who have recommended this book to me, nor the number of good reviews I’ve read about it either, and rightfully so. This is one of the most wonderfully-written love stories I have ever come across. I absolutely loved it and I never wanted it to end.
2. Kiffe Kiffe Tomorrow by Faiza Guene [Amazon] -
   (Young Adult Fiction) It’s quite amazing how this was written by Guene who is only in her late teens or early twenties. It’s a pleasant read but I was a bit disappointed because I was expecting more insights , I suppose. Overall though, good book.
3. Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert [Amazon] -
   (Non-Fiction) Another book that has been displayed all over the bookstores, but once again, rightfully so! This is Gilbert’s travel account of the one year she spent traveling in Italy, India and Indonesia in search for everything. Brilliant! Read it. It’ll spark your interest in traveling and in appreciating the small things.

I totally forgot to do this after my first post in January! HAHA. So this is me catching up.

Total number of books read in 2008: 12/50

1. Futility and Other Animals by Frank Moorhouse [Random House] -
   (Fiction: Short Stories) I first encountered Moorhouse in my Australian Literature class last year where I was drawn to the simplicity of his language and interconnectedness of his stories. I liked reading this, but the stories I read from The Americans, Baby appealed to more.
2. When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro [Amazon] -
   (Fiction) I may be alone in this, but of the two Ishiguro books I’ve read, I’ve always felt they were heavy and dragging in some parts. The ending was great though.
3. The Pilot’s Wife by Anita Shreve [Amazon] -
   (Fiction) Quick read. One of those books you’ll have a hard time putting down.
4. Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult [Amazon] -
   (Fiction) I was particularly drawn to this novel because it dealt with characters from the Amish community, which I have always found interesting. Aside from that, this is another Picoult book which did not disappoint.
5. The Wonder Spot by Melissa Bank [Amazon] -
   (Fiction) Witty and endearing. This is such an enjoyable book for women! Not quite as amazing as her first book, The Girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing, though but definitely something I’d recommend still.
6. Inside the Mind of Gideon Rayburn by Sarah Miller [Amazon] -
   (Young Adult Fiction) This novel had an interesting premise: a girl inexplicably finds herself inside the mind of a boy named Gideon. Thus she she hears his thoughts and starts to understand how boys really think. While the majority of the novel was funny and entertaining to read, I didn’t see the importance of the premise to the story at all. It could have been written from the point of view of Gideon and it wouldn’t have made much of a difference. I suppose it was more of a marketing ploy to attract its target audience really.

John Krasinski is awesome.

“People named me one of the Sexiest Men Alive in 2006. I’m still fairly sure they made a mistake, but I’ll take it gladly. I’ll have to go back and thank my parents for that, since I think they did the dirty work there. I’m not sure it really has anything to do with me, honestly.”

Posting this other one which is definitely one of my favorites. On what he imagines his alternate-universe life as a teacher to be like:

I go by Mr. K. I’m teaching English at a prep school in Connecticut. In my class, homework is not homework, it’s preparation for the next day. I love teaching books that have been pigeonholed as “epics”, and my big thing is discovering for yourself why you like them. I’d have a lot of stuff written in some cryptic way on the whiteboard where you can’t understand it until we start talking about the book. I’d throw desk supplies off bridges… I’ve gone out on several dates with the bio teacher. Her name is Sarah, and she’s just a really great girl. I’m more gregarious than she is; she brings me into this underground indie-world stuff and I bring her sonnets. It’s weird because the kids are talking about this new show called The Office and they’re like, “You guys are so much like Pam and Jim!” and I’m like, “I don’t have a TV. Sorry, I’m not into pop culture stuff.

I have no idea where this is from, tell me if you do.

I would like to believe I am in love - with someone I do not know and who did not figure in my plans at all. All these months of self-control, of denying love - have had exactly the opposite result: I have let myself be swept away by the first person to treat me a little differently. It’s just as well I don’t have his phone number, that I do not know where he lives; that way I can lose him without having to blame myself for another missed opportunity. And if that is what happens, if I have already lost him, I will at least have gained one very happy day in my life.
